Tips on how to keep your divorce process in perspective

Divorce can be a uniquely trying process. Not only are you separating from your romantic partner, you are separating from your financial partner, your social partner and perhaps even your parenting partner. There are so many legitimate reasons why navigating your divorce may lead you to want to put your head in the sand. However, it is critically important for both your legal process and your future generally that you remain engaged and that you maintain perspective whenever possible.

This is not to say that you cannot spend particularly rough days in your pajamas, on the couch, with your phone off. You can absolutely do this. But for the majority of the time, it is important that you take excellent care of yourself and remain engaged in your legal process. Failure to do so can result in negative consequences for your divorce settlement, your child custody dispute and/or your future in general.

“But how do I keep perspective right now?” you may ask. Keeping a few tips in mind and seeking out professional support when necessary can help you to achieve this important goal.

First, surround yourself with genuine support. If you cannot find support in your loved ones and friends, consider joining an online community or a group of individuals that share a mutual hobby of yours. Isolation for too long does not generally help individuals maintain a clear and optimistic perspective.

Second, take excellent care of yourself both physically and emotionally. If you are fueling your mind, body and spirit with healthy influences, you will be much more likely to feel healthy and capable.

Finally, be gentle with yourself. You may be struggling with feelings of sadness, anger, grief, disbelief, jealousy, fear, abandonment and a host of other challenging emotions. Because your partner is no longer there to care for you, it is vitally important that you care for yourself.
