Deployment and child support matters

At Kajko, Weisman & Colasanti, we know that deployment often affects families in a variety of ways. For example, children may not be able to spend time with their parents, which can make daily life even more challenging for military members. Furthermore, deployment can also result in legal issues concerning child support. If you are in the military, or the other parent of your child serves in the armed forces, deployment may have a significant impact on the child support you are required to pay or able to receive whether you live in Boston, Massachusetts, or anywhere else in the nation.

According to the Department of Revenue, deployment may affect your child support order in a number of ways. For starters, if you are deployed your income may be reduced considerably. If you experience a sizeable drop in your income, you may want to modify your child support order. Furthermore, if you are behind on child support payments, you may not be able to have your passport renewed or issued, which could be a requirement for deployment.

It is also important to ensure that any child support payments you are required to make are deducted from your military checks. Prior to deployment, you should try to make sure that your income will be withheld properly in order to avoid any delays. If your child support payments are delayed, you will have to use payment coupons to avoid falling behind on your child support obligations.

On our child custody and support page, you can review additional information related to child support modification.
